U.S. Smokejumpers first jumped to wildfires in 1940. The Department of Agriculture's U.S. Forest Service currently staffs seven jump bases in CA, ID, MT, OR, and WA with about 375 smokejumpers. The Department of Interior's Bureau of Land Management employs about 125 smokejumpers at bases in AK and ID. Jumpers are invaluable initial attack specialists.
